Which Mountain Bike Framing Materials are Best?

Written by Debbie Parkinson on February 1, 2010 – 4:22 pm -

The cost of a mountain bike frame is proportionate to its material, as well as the treatment that material has received. Currently, there are five types of material used in mountain bikes – high tensile steel, chromoly steel, aluminum, titanium, and carbon fiber. Oversized diameters, heat treating, and butting are tubing material treatments that will increase the cost of a frame as well.

High tensile steel is a very durable alloy that’s found in lower priced mountain bikes. It offers a high carbon content which makes it less stiff than chromoly steel, so more materials are needed to make it stiff enough for bicycle frames, which will in turn make it that much heavier.

Relatively inexpensive to produce, you’ll find high tensile steel in trail bikes, city bikes, and even entry level mountain bikes. There are some bikes that come with a chromoly seat tube, while the rest is high tensile steel.

Chromoly (short for steel alloy) is the next type of framing material on our list and can better be described by its major additives which are chromium and molybdenum. Of all the materials, chromoly is probably the most refined and can give you up to 100 years of dependability.

Why Not Quit Teaching

Written by Liane Carmi on February 1, 2010 – 11:40 am -

Have you been considering the decision to quit teaching? As a teacher, this thought goes around in my mind every time I check exams, attend an administration meeting, or try learning a new task. But then again, it has been years, and I am still hooked on it.

Many teachers have noted and even stressed how small the salary of a teacher is – even if you have your masters degree or even doctorate degree. Compared to those who work in Corporate America, your salary as a teacher really is very low. But guess what? In spite of this, there are some things you will really love about teaching that you just can’t find anywhere else. Allow me to stress some reasons why not to quit teaching.

Reason # 1: Meeting new people. Student profiles changes every now and then. Each year, each semester, new students walk into and out your classroom. This has been a tradition and a blessing as well for teachers. It is with this process you get to know new people, discovering new personalities, and definitely gain new friends. Since our environment is so diverse and evolving constantly, we can not deny that teachers have the largest circle of friends. Think about having 40 new members in your class every year or every semester. As your years of stay progresses, the initial 40 will lead to hundreds and even thousands of new faces. Moreover, some of these students will never forget you and will continue to address you as their mentor.
