Broncos Defense Shuts Down Browns
Written by Ross Everett on February 17, 2010 – 9:48 am -After struggling all preseason, the Denver Broncos have actually looked pretty good since starting the 2009 regular season campaign. On Sunday, the Broncos used a tough defense and QB Kyle Ortons efficient and mistake free play to top the Cleveland Browns 27-6. The Broncos also had a productive running game, and outgained the Browns by a margin of 449 yards to 200.
Individuals with an interest in playing a bet on NFL football were rewarded by backing Denver as -3 home favorites, and the Broncos easily covered the pointspread. The Broncos are now 2-0 both straight up and to the number, while the Browns dropped to 0-2 straight up and against the spread. The 33 combined points went UNDER the total of 39. Denver has played UNDER in both of their 2009 NFL regular season games, while Cleveland has split their O/U verdicts at 1-1.
Broncos defensive end Elvis Dumervil led the effort with four sacks in one half, tying a Denver franchise record. Veteran linebacker Andrea Davis marveled at his dubiously named teammates performance:
“Man, that was amazing. You don’t see a guy get four sacks in one half. He really turned it on.”

Written by Ross Everett on February 17, 2010 – 9:34 am -The Calgary Stampeders used a solid all around game from running back Joffrey Reynolds to beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 31-23 before 35,000 fans at McMahon Stadium in weekend CFL action. The victory evened the Stamps record at 3-3 on the season and left them tied for first place in the CFL West Division with Saskatchewan and Edmonton.
Reynolds ran one touchdown and caught another to lead the Stamps offensive attack. After the game, he received props from Stampeders’ signal caller Henry Burris:
“Joffrey, he’s been an animal. He’s a proven professional. To me, he’s the best running back in the league and he shows it game in and game out.”
Reynolds displayed impressive humility as he accepted Burris compliment:
“Any time that you can be mentioned with great players in this franchise and in this league, you’ve got to be happy about that. I’m just trying to play good football and just help us win games.”
Winnipeg running back Fred Reid rushed for a pair of touchdowns, but realizes that his team needs to compete for 60 minutes if they want to win games in the CFL:

Burnley Shocks English Premier League Champion Manchester United
Written by Ross Everett on February 17, 2010 – 9:23 am -The English Premier League season is only a couple of weeks old, but newly promoted Burnley has already pulled off what may be the biggest upset of the season in all of European soccer. In their first home game at the top level of English soccer in 33 years, Robbie Blake scored early in the game and Burnley held on to upset reigning league champions Manchester United before 20,000 jubilant fans.
The Clarets were putting good pressure on Man U goaltender Ben Foster early in the game, and Blake made their effort pay at the 18 minute mark when he scored on a near post volley. That was the only score of the game, despite the best efforts of the visitors who seemingly awoke from their slumber at this point and began to put the pressure on the Burnley upstarts. Man U would hold a 19-9 shots on goal advantage for the game, and hold a lopsided 67%/33% time of possession edge.
Still, Burnley would hold the advantage on the big scoreboard at the end of the game thanks to the steady play of their netminder Brian Jensen who withstood the Man U onslaught to preserve the historic victory. Afterwards, Burnley manager Owen Coyle commended Man U general Sir Alex Ferguson with his graciousness in defeat:

Alouettes Survive Tough Challenge From Roughriders To Remain Atop CFL
Written by Ross Everett on February 17, 2010 – 9:06 am -The Montreal Alouettes withstood a tough challenge from the Saskatchewan Roughriders to win their 7th game of the season by a 34-25 margin. Montreal remained atop the CFL with a 7-1 record, while the Roughriders slipped to 4-4. Als rookie QB Chris Leak scored the winning points with a touchdown on the first play of his CFL career.
After the game, Leak focused on earning the trust of his teammates:
“It’s a about trust – that’s the number one thing. I’m just happy for the opportunity to earn the trust of the coaches and my teammates.”
Saskatchewan has only won twice in their past eleven trips to Montreal, and will have to wait until next season to try and gain a measure of redemption.
The Roughriders held the edge in most of the statistical categories, but were undone by turnovers and a failure to cash in on drives deep into Als territory. Riders coach Ken Miller said in his postgame comments that there was plenty of responsibility to go around:

Free Agent Iverson Could Be ‘The Answer’ In Memphis
Written by Ross Everett on February 17, 2010 – 8:53 am -Allen Iverson is one of the most high profile NBA free agents left on the market, though his future plans may be determined in the next 48 hours. On Wednesday, Iverson sent a Twitter update indicating that the Memphis Grizzlies had made him an offer. Later that night, that information was confirmed by Memphis GM Chris Wallace.
Iverson had received the most interest from the Charlotte Bobcats and Miami Heat. Both teams have a lot of upside for ‘The Answer’-the Bobcats are coached by his Larry Brown, whom Iverson played for in Philadelphia. The notoriously hard to coach Iverson has always held Brown in high regard, and on a team struggling to find an identity he’d receive a lot of playing time and be the focal point of the team’s offense. Miami would likely use Iverson in a reserve role-while he bristled at that assignment in Detroit, he’s suggested that he’d be more receptive to it on a contending team.
From a financial standpoint, however, there are problems with both Miami and Charlotte. The Heat is already over the salary cap, and simply doesn’t have the personnel budget to pay Iverson what he could demand elsewhere. Charlotte, meanwhile, is up for sale and would be able to offer Iverson a short term deal with the prospect for renegotiation later, but that may not be something he’s interested in.

#1 Florida Routs Hapless Troy State
Written by Ross Everett on February 17, 2010 – 8:16 am -The 2009 college football season is already two weeks old and so far its looked almost too easy for defending national champions Florida. That was expected last week, as they destroyed overmatched FCS opponent Charleston Southern 62-3, but it wasnt much harder today against a better class of opposition. QB Tim Tebow threw for four touchdowns and ran for a fifth as the Gators demolished Troy State 56-6. The Gators led only 7-3 at the end of the first quarter before scoring seven unanswered touchdowns. Florida is now 2-0 on the season, while Troy dropped to 0-2. The Gators have outscored their first two opponents by an outlandish aggregate score of 118-9.
Despite a generous head start from the pointspread, Troy State lost against the money as well. Florida covered as -37 home favorites”their third straight ATS cover as a favorite of 31 or more. The Gators also won and covered the last time the two teams met, cashing tickets for college football betting enthusiasts as a -26 favorite in 2007.
After the contest, Florida coach Urban Meyer gave most of the praise to a defense that limited Troy to 139 yards of total offense:

Titans Hold Off Bills In NFL Hall Of Fame Game
Written by Ross Everett on February 17, 2010 – 8:13 am -The NFL preseason got underway on Saturday with the annual Hall of Fame Game, and the Tennessee Titans earned the victory as they built a 21-3 first half lead before holding off a late Buffalo Bills comeback to prevail 21-18.
Tennessee starting QB Kerry Collins and backup Vince Young both looked sharp as they combined to lead the Titans offense to three first half touchdowns. Collins, who signed a two year $15 million contract during the NFL off season, sounded optimistic about his teams prospects this year based on the positive early results:
“I’m encouraged. It doesn’t take as long to get ready, but I’ll take advantage of the work I’m going to get.”
Young struggled early with his touch, but recovered to hit Paul Williams on a second quarter TD. After the game, he admitted that getting back in the groove was just the nature of the beast in the NFL preseason:
“It happens, man. I know everybody wants me to go out and be perfect, but it’s not happening like that. You can’t just jump into it.”
