Tips On How To Jump Higher In Basketball

Written by Mark Walters on February 24, 2010 – 11:04 am -

Basketball is a game where height really matters. In a game where a ball must go through a hoop that is ten feet above the ground, it is obvious why that is the case. However, height is not the only thing that matters in the game.

You also need strength, speed, and the ability to jump high. How to jump higher in basketball is therefore something all basketball players would like to know.

There are many exercises and drills that trainers and coaches force their players to carry out. These vary in their level of intensity and duration, and most are require the assistance of teammates to complete. However, you can definitely train yourself to jump higher without the assistance of anyone else.

To give you a hint of what you will force yourself to undergo to be able to jump higher off the ground, here are some of the basic exercises that you will need to do…

The most basic one is jumping rope. You will no doubt have heard of the benefits of this before, but have, none done it since you were a child. This is no problem as you will re-learn it soon enough.

Blazers Add Canby For Stretch Run

Written by Ross Everett on February 21, 2010 – 6:35 am -

The Portland Trailblazers have needed a big inside presence ever since starting center Greg Oden and backup Joel Pryzbilla went down with season ending injuries. They finally found one on Tuesday as they acquired veteran Marcus Canby from the Los Angeles Clippers. Canby is expected to make his debut in a Blazers’ uniform on Friday when Portland hosts the Boston Celtics.

The transaction also served to answer the nagging question about Portland’s point guard situation. Steve Blake and Andre Miller have shared time running the offense, but Blazers’ management apparently felt that Miller was a better fit with superstar shooting guard Brandon Roy.

All three players involved are in the final year of their current contract, meaning that barring anything unforeseen Canby’s career in Portland will probably last only 23 games plus the playoffs. Outlaw and Blake may or may not fit into the Clippers longterm plans-assuming that one of the NBA’s most consistently underachieving teams actually has ‘longterm plans’ in the first place.

Canby was introduced to the Rose Garden crowd during Portland’s rout of his old team, the LA Clippers receiving a standing ovation. Earlier, he’d indicated that he was excited to be going to the Blazers:

LA Clippers Relieve Mike Dunleavy Of Coaching Duties

Written by Ross Everett on February 18, 2010 – 5:28 am -

In one of the stranger front office shakeups in recent NBA history, the Los Angeles Clippers have ‘relieved’ Mike Dunleavy of his head coaching duties effective immediately. He’ll remain on board as the Clippers’ general manager, and both he and the team cited the demands of the forthcoming trade deadline and free agent market as a catalyst for the change.

Not surprisingly, there is much speculation as to the back story behind the move. Some with knowledge of the situation suggest that Clippers’ owner Donald Sterling wanted to fire Dunleavy altogether, but relented due to the $5 million the team will owe him in the final year of his contract next year. More recently, a bizarre rumor has been circulating that Sterling has approached Isiah Thomas about taking over Dunleavy’s coaching position and becoming team president. While Isiah would bring a level of fabulousness never before seen on the Clippers’ sidelines, he hasn’t had much success either as a coach or executive in the NBA.

Dunleavy issued this statement, playing along with the team’s insistence that the decision to give up coaching was ‘mutual’:

Kobe, Iverson Miss NBA All Star Game

Written by Ross Everett on February 18, 2010 – 5:18 am -

The NBA All Star game was played without a couple of high profile participants this year as the Los Angeles Lakers’ Kobe Bryant and Philadelphia 76ers’ Allen Iverson would not play due to injury. Kobe and ‘AI’ were the latest in a string of injuries to All Star players that also claimed Portland’s Brandon Roy and New Orleans’ Chris Paul. The NBA has been much more strict about attendance at the All Star game since a number of players skipped out with dubious injuries.

Kobe Bryant has been plagued with minor injuries all year, but missed the Lakers’ last three games prior to the All Star contest due to an ankle sprain. Los Angeles is hopeful that by not playing in the game that Kobe will be able to return to action immediately after play resumes following the All Star break. Bryant did travel to Dallas to participate in All Star game festivities.

Learn How to Grow Taller

Written by Don Vincent on February 15, 2010 – 8:27 am -

“We are what we eat” – This is the fact. If you are looking to increase your height and become tall, your answer is your diet. Why is diet important? Let us start with basics first. Our growth is extensively controlled by the growth hormones. Any student would be able to tell you that, hormones are made up of amino acids.

Amino acids are considered to be the building blocks of protein. So in order to get amino acids, you need to take in proteins. The consumed protein is broken down into amino acids, during digestion.

With that said, the secret to how to having a taller height is not to consume proteins in high amounts. Instead, (as what my doctor would always tell me) take food in moderation.

What food items are considered to be good source for proteins? Peanuts, red meat, eggs, fish.

But that’s not all behind the secret of how to grow taller.

Here are other things you need…

1. Calcium

You know as much as I do that our bones are made of calcium (another hint to how to grow taller), so it’s obvious that you need to have a healthy calcium intake so that your body has the starting material to build your bones.

Best Vertical Program – Watch Out For These 3 Scams

Written by Mat Hultquist on February 9, 2010 – 10:39 am -

When searching for the best vertical program, it can be extremely frustrating because every one of them claims to be the best.

Examine the websites of The Vertical Bible, The Jump Manual, Vertical Mastery and The Vertical Project and they will claim to be the best vertical program.

So, when you are ready to buy one of these programs, how are you possibly supposed to choose? In our research, we have found that there are generally 3 scams to watch out for:

1. Monthly coaching charges – does the program charge you monthly for “one-on-one” coaching? There are great vertical programs on the market that have legitimate monthly coaching. But they generally only cost $10-$12 per month. You have to watch out for the programs with monthly coaching that 1) is very expensive (some are $150 and up per month) and 2) don’t tell you clearly about their monthly fees.

It’s irritating, but some of the ones that are easily not the best vertical programs charge you for coaching, but you only find out about it after you have paid and they have your credit card information.

3 Critical Exercises To Increase Vertical Jump

Written by Mat Hultquist on February 8, 2010 – 6:55 pm -

If you’ve looked online for exercises to increase vertical jump, you’ve probably realized that the advice is plentiful and varied. From my years of experience working with athletes, I have realized there are 3 critical exercises you must do to increase your vertical jump:

1. Squats – more specifically free weight squats. You want to do free weight squats as opposed to squats on a leg press or other machine because free weight squats, when done correctly, will also strengthen your core. This is extremely important as the core is a key area you need to strengthen if you want to increase your vertical jump.

The main reason squatting with free weights is one of the key exercises to increase vertical jump is because they strengthen your quads, hamstrings and glutes. Strong quads, hams and glutes are essential if you want to vertically explode off the ground.

2. Calf raises – Stong calves are essential to building power and explosiveness. This is one of the critical exercises to increase vertical jump because you could have really strong legs, but weak calves, and you won’t come close to reaching your vertical potential. There are so many different ways to do calf raises, but just make sure to pick a calf raise exercise that is both challenging and fun.

Outside Basketball Courts

Written by Karl Johnstock on February 2, 2010 – 11:19 pm -

Is basketball your favorite sport? Then you may be carrying that long time wish of having your own outside basketball courts right in the backyard of your own home. This is for you to be able to play anytime that you feel like enjoying favorite sport.

Measuring the lawn is the first step that you need to take in building your very own outside basketball courts. This is fairly important for you need to fit the size of your court with the measure of the space you have allotted. If you happen to have a big space to work on, then much better. You can surely create a full basketball court. You can ask your friends to help you out with this task.

The next step to do is to assess the lawn ground where you will build your outside basketball courts. This is to ensure that you have a leveled ground for your court. Remember that unleveled ground will make the ball bounce on a different direction and will affect the game aside from the fact that it can cause accidents.

Everything You Need To Know About Basketball Hoops?

Written by Andy Zain on January 30, 2010 – 1:54 pm -

Basketball is a game won by the team with the most points. These points are scored by getting a ball to go through metal ring that is placed 10ft high. In America the two main basketball associations are the NBA and the NWBA. The official rules state that the basketball hoop has to be 18in wide. From the hoop a net is attached this varies in length from 15-18in. In most cases this net is made from nylon. The material commonly used to produce the metal ring is steel. This hoop is attached to a backboard in most cases when games are placed competitively.

Steel is used to create the metal hoop and is usually coated in a powder to protect it. In competitive games it is connected to a backboard.

The peach basket was replaced in 1906 by the metal hoop that we see today. At the beginning spectators could interfere with shots, so the backboard was introduced, to which the hoop was attached. A bonus of this was that players could now score by hitting the backboard at specific angles.
