Sidney’s Candy Romps In La Jolla Handicap
Written by Ross Everett on August 26, 2010 – 8:31 am -Kentucky Derby pace setter Sidney’s Candy has already demonstrated that he can run on dirt and synthetic tracks, but he may be his best on grass. On Saturday at Del Mar set a turf course record as he dominated the rest of the field in the 1 1/16 mile Grade 2 La Jolla Handicap. It was his first career race on turf, and his sizzling performance which produced a 102 Beyer Speed Figure suggests that his immediate future will be on grass. The previous turf course record course record was set by Mea Domina on September 2, 2006
Although Sidney’s Candy has a pedigree that suggests a good turf horse, no one expected such a strong effort this first time out. Sidney’s Candy is by Candy Ride-who won stakes races on both turf and dirt–and his dam, Fair Exchange, is by Storm Cat out of the mare Exchange, a top-class grass runner. Trainer John Sadler talked about his horse’s performance:
“He worked on [grass] really well last week. We’re thrilled with his performance.”

The History Of Del Mar Racetrack
Written by Terry Hunefeld on August 14, 2010 – 6:14 am -In 1937, a well known singer named Bing Crosby talked to some of his Hollywood friends about a dream he had to build a horse racing track in the quiet resort community of Del Mar California, just north of San Diego. His friends Jimmy Durante and Pat O’Brien shared Bing’s dream and set out to help him build a great race track and where they could play the horses all day and the girls all night in the pleasant climate and cooling Pacific coast breezes of Del Mar.
When the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and race track opened, Bing himself took tickets at the gate and welcomed race fans to what was to become one of the most famous race tracks in the United States, visited by race fans, horse owners and sports enthusiasts from all over the world.
In August of 1938, the track hosted a $25,000 winner-take-all match race of Seabiscuit. This was an era when horse racing ranked second in popularity only to Major League Baseball. The race was front page sports section news in all the major newspapers was the first nationwide broadcast of a thoroughbred horse race by NBC radio. Seabiscuit won this important race by a nose before a record crowd and the Del Mar Race Track was “on the map” as one of the most famous race tracks in the world.

Looking At The History Of Horse Racing
Written by Byron Jonas on August 7, 2010 – 8:32 am -Millions of people all over the globe tune their television sets to the Kentucky Derby. The derby is a modernized version of a sport that was popular centuries ago. A history of horse racing can begin with a mention of the ancient pastime of chariot racing but that would not fully describe the way we look at horse racing today. These days, people do not travel to the Hippodrome to watch chariots being dragged along the track at full speed.
I am sure you have heard of Henry VIII, king of England in the early 16th century. He is probably best known for his many wives. But he also had plenty of horses. The king would send agents on missions to Italy, Spain and North Africa to bring back those areas’ finest horses. His new additions would then be raced against other nobles’ horses. It is from Henry the Eighth and his races from which the phrase “sport of kings” likely derived.
Two centuries later and across the Atlantic, we find ourselves in the English colony of America. Horse racing became a staple to American life, especially in Kentucky. In Kentucky, pretty much every major settlement had a section of land off the main road specifically set aside for the racing of horses. Furthermore, the famous statesman Henry Clay was the founder of one of Kentucky’s first jockey clubs.

The Different Types Of Racing Systems
Written by Saul Goodman on August 2, 2010 – 2:02 pm -Horse racing systems may be as old as the sport itself. It is not for nothing that racing horses has long been known as “the sport of kings” for it takes a lot of money to own horses – and to bet enjoyably on them. Sure it’s possible to put down very modest amounts in today’s races, but that would be like going to a five-star restaurant just to have a glass of water.
After all, popular though the pastime is, it is worth a hundred and fifteen billion dollars worldwide, a sum unlikely to consist entirely of small wagers! Hence, along with this noble equestrian sport has come different racing systems created to improve one’s odds. In the United States, betting on horse races is governed by the individual states in which the racetrack is located.
Cross state lines, however, and there’s remarkably little oversight, as interstate commerce is a federal responsibility and apparently not one that preoccupies Washington too much (after all, they hardly bother with illegal immigration). Thus have businesses sprung up to simulcast betting across state lines, largely without any oversight except for wider statutes on gambling in general.

There are a multitude of international race tracks around the world and other organizations that deal with international racing. Some of which are listed below.
Dubai World Cup was started back in 1996. The reason it was built was so the Arabic countries could once again be part of the horse racing world. The opening of the Dubai track helped to put the United Arab Emirates on the Radar. England, Scotland and Wales offer about 70 different race tracks for racing fans. One of the more famous courses would be where the Grand National or John Smith Grand National is held and that would be at the beautiful AinTree racecourse.

The History Of Horse Racing In Britain And America
Written by Byron Jonas on July 3, 2010 – 7:43 am -The first man that saw horses running across a flat part of land probably wagered a bet he knew which horse was going to get there first. Once man started to domesticate the horse around 4500 BC in Asia they started to race them and the only people that could participate were kings and the nobles of the area. Horse racing was one of the events during the very first Greek Olympics. This was the beginning of the History of horse racing.
In England the knights that went on the crusades returned with Arabian horses during the twelfth century. These horses were graceful and fast unlike the English horses that worked the fields. Several Stallions were bred with some of the mares of English descent creating a strong and durable horse with a great deal of speed. The nobles of the kingdom would bet on which horse would cross the finish line first and that started horse racing as we know it today.
