Oakland Raiders Improving
Written by Albert Womack on November 17, 2009 – 7:30 pm -The Oakland Raiders are an interesting team. Dominant in the earlier part of the decade thanks to players like Rich Gannon, Jerry Rice, Charlie Garner, and Tim Brown, the Raiders have struggled mightily over the past few years, attempting to rebuild, and encountering many problems along the way.
Various experiments, like the Randy Moss, Lamont Jordan, and Daunte Culpepper experiments, have been failures. While there’s been a strong pass defense in Oakland over the past few seasons, that’s been nearly it, as the team has a very hard time scoring.
Their secondary has been one of the top in the game, but that hasn’t been enough. With a horrible offense, the secondary won’t be able to do it alone.
With some first round draft picks over the past few years, some new hope may be coming to fruition in Oakland. Standout draft picks Darren McFadden and JaMarcus Russell have both shown signs of improvement in the 2009 season, especially in Russell’s case.
The Oakland Raiders defense isn’t the worse by far. The end of last year the Raiders defense did some things, the offense of the Raiders is crippling the team. The inability to move the ball will be a problem the entire year.
RB Darren McFadden really hasn’t lived up to expectations so far – his average per carry is a pedestrian 3.6 yards.
The Raiders definitely seen better days – the ironic thing is that the team might be so bad you won’t be able to see them on the field do to tv black-outs anyway.
The Raiders have a very long way to go if they ever expect to compete with the likes of San Diego. The AFC West might not be labeled the NFL”s “worst division”- but it hasn’t improved much. The Super Bowl appearance the Raiders had just a few years ago must seem like a 100 years ago to die-hard Raiders fans.
