What You Need To Know Before Buying A Heart Rate Monitor

Written by Chris Station on March 11, 2010 – 2:28 pm -

In the past, heart rate monitors were used almost exclusively by medical facilities to monitor a patient’s heart rate. But in today’s world, the role of the heart rate monitor has changed. Many ordinary people use monitors to keep track of their heart rates. Of course athletes rely on the information that their monitor provides to ensure that they are performing at their peak.

So what exactly is a heart rate monitor? Basically it is a piece of electronic equipment also known as a cardiac monitor. Its purpose is to observe and keep track of heart functions on a continuous basis.

Heart rate monitors serve an important purpose when used for medical reasons. Because patients wear monitors for a specific period of time as recommended by their doctor, they provide valuable information to medical personnel. By comparing data, doctors can change treatment plans if the data indicates a problem.

Heart rate monitors are no longer limited to medical uses. You can get a heart monitor for many different sports or activities. Each monitor has features specific to what it is being used for.

Bicycling with Children

Written by Nancy Sathre-Vogel on March 5, 2010 – 4:09 pm -

Parents around the world dream of heading out to see the world with their children. They’ll spend their days exploring the deserts of the Egyptian pyramids or gaze upon the dusty rose colored Taj Majal under a full moon. They’ll travel on buses, planes, trains, and donkey carts. But on bicycle? Exploring the world with kids on bikes?

With our children, my husband and I have now traveled 21,000 miles through twelve countries with our 12-year-old twin boys. We’ve discovered that traveling on bikes with kids is the best way to see the world.

Most families opt for buses or planes to travel the world, but they miss a lot that way. The motor allows you to easily reach the next city, so you tend to skip the small villages. However, it’s the small villages that have retained the character of the country. In today’s world, cities have become increasingly generic, but villages have not. Travel on bike allows you to spend time in the villages, thereby getting to know the countries you pass through more intimately.

How To Take Young Children On A Bicycle Tour

Written by Nancy Sathre-Vogel on March 5, 2010 – 4:01 pm -

Many people think they have to wait until their children are teenagers before heading out on a bicycle tour with them. But bicycling with small children can be a fabulous experience for all involved. There are a number of options available for touring with kids:

Trailers: Trailers are a great way to carry small children. Up to about age 3, this is your only option but older than that it might still be a good option, depending on your child. Pay attention to the needs of your child – some will be comfortable in the trailer, while other want to help out with the pedaling.

Trailers are wonderful in many ways. Kids can sleep easily while the parents pedal. When they wake up, they can either enjoy the surrounding countryside or play with toys stashed in the trailer with them. In addition, you may be able to store additional gear in the trailer with your child.

Trailer bikes: At age 3 or 4, your child will most likely be ready to transition to a trailer bike – a one-wheeled contraption that is hooked on to your bike. These are great in that your child can help you pedal and therefore feels more a part of the team.

Get the Most from Your Bike

Written by Patricia Walker on March 1, 2010 – 2:16 pm -

There are tons of benefits to riding your bike as opposed to taking your car everywhere. Personally, I have begun commuting by bike, its only 7 miles each way. You don’t have to take that drastic step, it is a big commitment, but you can start getting out on your bike more.

One of the greatest discoveries I made after my nephew was born was the baby wipe. They’re portable, pre-moistened, sanitary and safe. I perpetually have a pack with me. Besides being cheap, if you buy the flushable kind, they’re kind to the environment. Wiping your face down (to remove sweat, makeup, dirt) will leave you feeling fresh and the offer the perfect lift to your bike ride.

Another discovery I made when my nephew was born was the keychain sunscreen. I burn easily and have been taught to always protect my skin. Even those of you who are blessed with the ability to tan should put sunscreen on the more sensitive areas of the body. Skin cancer is indiscriminant and should be treated accordingly.

Fixed Wheel Bikes For First Time Buyers

Written by Jon Johnson on February 15, 2010 – 3:07 pm -

There are many trends that are becoming incredibly popular as the years go buy. For the last 5 years, fixed-gear bikes have been developed, built and seen riding around cities all over the world. If you need a reliable mode of transportation, something that can zip you around town, this is the best bike for you to ride. Follow this guide that will allow you to seek out your first fixie.

It is important that you purchase a bike that is going to be the right size for you. You do not want a bike that is so tall that you can barely reach the pedals or so short that you feel like you are on a children’s bicycle. These bikes are measured in centimeters so make sure that you are aware of the proper size first. Measure the inside of your leg down and you should be able to know your size.

When you get our new fixie the first thing you are going to want to do is hop on and ride. However, these bikes typically do not have brakes installed and therefore may present some safety issues for you. Install a front brake first in order for you to get used to riding around with the free-wheel hub. The wheel can easily be switched so that you can ride the bike as a simple single speed rather than a track bike.

The mid-Atlantic states are known for being fairly hilly and rocky. This makes for some really fun and challenging bike trails. Here are some of the finest in the area.

Hartwood Acres, just outside of Pittsburg has a little something for everyone. Experienced bikers will enjoy the quick switchbacks, downhill slopes, tough climbs and lots of root and log jumps. Hartwood Acres has over fifteen miles of trails including beautiful rock gardens and an unbelievable Tudor mansion to explore. The trails are free but there is a nominal fee for checking out the estate.

Ohio has the Scioto Trail State Forest near Waverly City. There are lots of trails to choose from and they add up to over 26 miles of gravel and dirt. Beginners are welcome but experienced bikers will enjoy the technical trails. Watch out for the horseback riders though as these trails are shared.

Freedom Park in Williamsburg,VA has 3 beautiful loop trails totaling about 5 miles in length. This particular bike trail is great for families. The trails are not especially difficult and there are so many historical sites to explore. Williamsburg is well known for the Revolutionary War reenactments which evokes a sense of colonial adventure. The bike paths have some historical obstacles and cool bridges to give the family the full experience.

Custom Cycling Socks 101

Written by Joe Pied on February 8, 2010 – 5:54 pm -

Cycling socks? What are those? If you cycle a lot, whether or not you’re in exercising for that sport or not, you need a specialized kind of sock so that the moisture your feet generate will not be absorbed by your skin and therefore causes it to be a lot more susceptible to skin irritations and blisters. In addition, sportsman’s foot and other fungal and bacterial infections might be considerably more frequent in feet that are often wet.

Biking socks use special yarns that wick humidity away from the skin; the moisture is moved to an outside layer so that the skin continues to breathe and the feet stay dry, which facilitates keeping them free of blisters and less prone to microbial and fungal infections.

Biking socks are also special due to the fact they don’t require breathable sneakers to evaporate sweat. Rather, their own specific combination of wicking and “water loving” yarns absorb moisture and lock it away from the skin. On top of that, should you be cycling in cold weather, you need yarns that are going to insulate and keep your feet warm, too. So these insulating fibers employed for the cycling socks also trap warmth and air even as they wick away humidity and enable skin to breathe.
