The Top 5 Resorts And Locations For Golf Holidays In Portugal

Written by Rod Dunne on July 8, 2010 – 10:01 am -

Within Europe, Portugal has long been regarded as the ideal location for golf holidays due to its year round fine weather and range of championship courses. This does make compiling a top five list quite tricky.

For this reason, this list is the culmination of personal experience of several golf holidays in Portugal and a variety of forum surveys. The courses chosen are selected for their location, quality of greens & fairways and the sheer variety of game play they can offer through 18 holes of golf.

On a hot summer’s day the 6000 yard Estoril course is an enjoyable treat. The course requires skill around the 18 holes to navigate the well placed bunkers and difficult rough.

San Lorenzo is one of the gems of the Algarve region. It regularly features on European top 10 lists of courses and boasts finely manicured greens and fairways with a course design that offers a range of holes.

The south course in Quinta do Lago is the more mature of the two courses available to play at this resort. Some holes prove challenging due to the stark Atlantic Ocean breeze, while other holes are sheltered by lush vegetation and forestry. Given the courses maturity, the greens play exceptionally true and fast as one would expect.

Top 5 Resorts And Locations For Golf Holidays In Portugal

Written by Ethan White on May 29, 2010 – 8:47 am -

Portugal has long been regarded as one of the great European golfing destinations. The combination of great year round weather, a thriving tourism industry (and its associated hotels & resorts) and the country’s love of golf makes it difficult to pick a top 5 list of courses.

This list brings together courses from all corners of Portugal rather than just focus in on the Algarve region. As air travel and city breaks become more economical the Estoril and west coast area around Lisbon is fast becoming a golfing hot-spot.

Praia D’El Rey: Just a short drive from Lisbon, this tough links course provides challenges on each hole. Some are wide open to the Atlantic Ocean breezes. Others are partly sheltered by forestation. The quality of the greens throughout is consistent and this makes for a great setting on a summers days.

Oitavos: This well designed course has been the venue on occasion for the Portuguese Open due to its professional design and good variety of holes. Amateurs may find it a little long from the back tees, especially on hot summer days.

Estoril Golf Club: Day trippers from Lisbon will enjoy this interestingly designed course. At only 6000 yards long, the course demands careful course management rather than long drive abilities.

Ballybunion Hotels: Top Three Hotels In The South West Of Ireland

Written by Emma Jones on May 29, 2010 – 3:07 am -

Visitors to the coastal town of Ballybunion in County Kerry, Ireland, will quickly realise that the majority of Ballybunion hotels are situated in the countryside surrounding the village. The three hotels selected here epitomize the quality of service, fantastic views and mouth-watering food that the region has become famous for.

One of the more exclusive hotels in the region is the 15th century Ballyseede Castle. The castle’s twelve guest rooms are each uniquely furnished and all have panoramic views of the castle estate and gardens.

The hotel manages to retain an old world charm through its use of ornate plasterwork and large open fireplaces and other period features. The hotel’s small capacity makes this a very personable stay with dinner in the castle dining room being a most memorable experience, with gastronomic treats to match the setting.

Glin Castle is yet another authentic old castle in the region, but on a grander scale with a large variety of guest room styles and sizes. The castle sits within a tree-lined country estate with their own walled garden and beautiful lawns stretching down to the Shannon estuary.

Golf Holidays in Portugal – Where Are The Best Places To Go On Golfing Breaks

Written by Arthur J. McDermott on May 13, 2010 – 1:52 pm -

Portugal has been competing with Spain for many years to draw in holiday golfers. Its combination of excellent courses, great infrastructure (hotels, resorts, restaurants, etc) and inviting weather conditions has elevated the county to being a highly desirable destination.

The country’s main regions are Estoril (around the capital of Lisbon), the Oeste region, the Algarve and Madeira. Each provides a good mix of golfing/touristic options that will suit any golfing itinerary.

The Estoril region around the Portuguese capital has 10 high quality golf resorts so makes a good spot for those wishing to mix golfing with the cosmopolitan life of Lisbon. Some golfing highlights included the Rocky Roquemore designed Golden Eagle and the two Aroeira courses. While the one must-play course has got to be the Praia d’El Rey.

The Oeste region is a burgeoning area that has only recently started resort & course development at any great level. For some the scenic countryside, slightly cooler climate and new courses may suit those who wish to avoid the hustle and bustle in bigger resorts.

Discover Ireland – Ballybunion Hotels And Amenities Guide

Written by Michael J. Murphy on April 16, 2010 – 10:38 am -

To the uninitiated, Ballybunion is a wonderful coastal village in County Kerry in Ireland that has been attracting visitors in droves over the years to its beaches and world class golf course.

This resort town is seeing a resurgence in popularity of late principally for the fact that it has held on to its old style charm and not given in to the waves of fast-food restaurants and caf bars. This factor has drawn in Irish & foreign visitors looking for a more traditional Irish experience.

The brunt of tourism to the area is drawn to the family-friendly beach and secondly to the local golf courses.

The central focus of the town in summer is the main beach. It is a family friendly beach with plenty of space and good quality sand. The local surf school has become popular in recent years offering equipment rental and surfing lessons for all levels (the waves are not particularly high so it is an ideal spot for beginners).

When the beach is crowded in summer, many visitors partake of the enjoyable cliff walk to take in the sea views and also visit some of the other beaches in the area. The ‘Nuns’ beach, with its overlooking nunnery, is a particularly nice spot for whiling away a relaxing summers day.

A Guide To Golf Holidays In Portugal

Written by Arthur A. Sellers on April 3, 2010 – 6:46 am -

A golf holiday to Portugal may be something that a great many foreign visitors won’t initially consider. In terms of European golf, the country is competing against the golfing super-powers of the British Isles, with its golfing heritage, and neighboring Spain, with its range of courses.

The array of top quality golf courses combined with the Mediterranean climate has been a huge draw for golfing breaks. The Portuguese government and the tourism board have also seen the tourism potential of holiday golfers so a great many golf resorts have begun to spring up in several regions.

The main golfing holiday regions are centered on the Lisbon region in the south west, the Algarve region in the south, the island of Madeira and the Oeste region.

For those wishing to combine their golf holidays in Portugal with sight-seeing and culture, then a stay in Portugal’s capital Lisbon and the Estoril Coast could make the ideal solution. Given that the IAGTO organization voted the region as the Best European Golf Destination in 2007 you can be sure that the services, facilities and range of clubs are going to be enough for the most demanding tastes. The Estoril coast has over 10 quality golf resorts. To the west there are some challenging and windswept (by Atlantic breezes) clubs – most notably, Praia d’El Rey, which would have to be the most famous in the region and really is one to savor.

Golf Resorts in the US

Written by Richard E Baly on October 24, 2009 – 6:10 am -

Each and every year, golfers from all around the world travel to the United States to play golf. The United States is often considered the golfing Mecca of the world. The United States is filled with popular golf resorts and courses. Many of these resorts and courses are backed by mind boggling history. Many of these courses are the sites in which the legends made their names and built their legendary stories.

The Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina has a history dating back to 1895. Many people refer to the Pinehurst Resort as the unofficial home of golf in the United States. This North Carolina golf resort consists of a total of eight different golf courses including the second course which is a masterpiece created by Donald Ross. Many players end up playing through this dramatic course at least twice during their stay.

The Pinehurst Resort consists of two thousands acres and eight different courses which is more than any resort in the United States. Course number one and three are classic courses. This course was founded in 1898 by various architects. While this is a short course only consisting of 70 pars and a little over six thousand yards, a few mistakes can make for a very long day. This popular course went through nine months of renovations and reopened in March 2008.

Why You Need Golf Travel Cases

Written by Tim Sanders on September 27, 2009 – 5:52 am -

So you have finally bought that brand new spanking set of golf clubs. You are raring to go out to the course and strut your stuff. But wait, aren’t we forgetting something? That’s right; you need something to fit your golf clubs in! Now you are not going to hand carry all your golf clubs around the course are you?

There are a variety of golf travel cases you can choose from when it comes to fitting your golf clubs in. Choosing the right one for you is important because buying a golf bag that is ill-fitted for your golf gear could mean possible damage to it if you have problems fitting them in. Or it might get knocked around easily. So what kind of golf bags should you look for to ensure that this doesn’t happen?

There are many brands you can choose from when it comes to golf travel cases. If you have the money and have just bought some pretty expensive golf gear, then you might want to invest in something that has lots of room space and especially sturdy. Most golf-stores would have these in stock and you can ask the salesperson for a hard-sided golf travel case. These golf bags pack plenty of space and can hold up against rough handling (don’t go out of your way to test that though!). Even in airports where your luggage may be thrown about pretty roughly, it can still take withstand quite a lot of pressure.
