Socks are woven hosiery product made to fit the feet tightly and part of the leg. Socks are useful in stopping foot chaffing when in contact with footwear, Give protection from the cold by taking in heat, and of course for fashionable reasons. The origin of the word sock most likely is from the Latin word soccus which was foot wear worn in ancient Rome.

We can see that the basic type of sock goes back a long time and in its early days was made out of leather and animal hair that was matted in a special way. That trend changed around 1000 years ago when socks were made out of silk and cotton. These socks were expensive and only those of upper class could afford to wear them. Around five hundred years later this changed with the arrival of a machine that could knit much faster.

The material used to make socks did not change much for a long time or until 1938 when nylon came into the market. This was when blending of materials was started and now manufacturers could make a more durable, comfortable and tighter fitting material. A few decades later more materials like spandex were also introduced.
