New York Giants – The History

Written by Freddie Brister on September 2, 2010 – 10:10 am -

The New York Giants have been a big part of American history and football spirit for many years, thanks to their best qualities: leadership and skill. They rank very highly in the NFL right now, and while they’ve had a history of some drama and injury, they’ve remained a very strong team throughout the years.

Ever since their first days as a team, the Giants have proven to be a team that can move very quickly through the ranks. They have done games for charity and fund-raising, and proved that pro football was a better, tougher game than college football. This was proven by their game against Notre Dame in the 1930s. They did not allow Notre Dame to score even one single point for that game.

The years from 1930-1980 saw some difficulty for the Giants. While they were still a strong team, games began to be harder for them to win. They did not have many strong quarterbacks for several years, and this led to a lack of unity and the creation of drama which stopped the team’s push to victory.

The History Of A Championship Team: The Indianapolis Colts

Written by Freddie Brister on September 1, 2010 – 11:31 am -

In 1953, a championship team was born: the Indianapolis Colts. Starting out in Baltimore, Maryland, the Colts began as the Baltimore Colts, playing in their home state. They didn’t end up in Indianapolis until 1984 where they played for many years at the Hoosier (now RCA) Dome. They have been named the horseshoes because of their logo and basic colors are blue and white, with the simple logo stamped on top.

The Colts didn’t start out as a winning team, however. When they were first playing in Indianapolis, they had a very difficult time. They lost, year and year again, and a huge depression sunk into the team. However, they finally selected a new coach, Ron Meyer, to replace their old one, and then the Colts took off. Under Ron Meyer, the Colts won their last three games of the season.

Meyer must have brought some magic to the team because at that point, the Colts started to win time and time again. They still lost some games, but ended up with the largest record of consecutive wins of any professional football team. He didn’t last, however; Bill Polian took over in 1996 and started a huge overhaul of the team’s players, getting rid of those who weren’t benefiting the team and selecting new players to help them rise. This turned out to be a very good move.

The Cincinnati Bearcats – An Explosive Team

Written by Freddie Brister on August 30, 2010 – 12:07 pm -

The University of Cincinnati is represented by the Cincinnati Bearcats in the Big East Conference since July 1, 2005. Previous to that date the team has joined other conferences. But when the program was created, the team played as an independent one. That was from 1885 to 1909. In those 25 years they have seven years of fewer wins than losses, three years with wins equaling losses and fourteen years in which they scored more wins. In 1907, the team did not play

From 1910 until 1924 the team played in the Ohio conference. Three of those fifteen years show the team with a greater number of losses. The next year, they switched to the Buckeye conference with which they remained until 1935. Their records show three years in which their losses were greater than their wins. After that, in 1936, the team became independent again, remaining like that until 1946. The record for those years likewise shows three losing years.

A Look Into The Iowa Hawkeyes

Written by Freddie Brister on August 30, 2010 – 11:01 am -

Football in the City of Iowa started out as a club sport in 1872. It eventually developed into an intercollegiate game in 1882. After six years, the first officially recognized football team of the University of Iowa was born. The original team was invited to play in the Western Football Conference on account of the prowess of its team members. This is also called the Big Ten Conference. After one year the performance of the team was outstanding and they were made to share in the Western Conference title.

It wasn’t until the early 1920’s that the team began to show a notable performance when they won 20 straight games under coach Howard Jones. Then the team caught the national attention in the season of 1939 when they won several upset victories. They were one point shy of the Big Ten Title but their Most Valuable Player Nile Kinnick won many distinctions, including the Heisman Trophy for that year.

Great News For USC Football

Written by Freddie Brister on August 29, 2010 – 10:32 am -

Fighting ban is over for Havili

After his violent altercation with cornerback T. J. Bryant, USC fullback Stanley Havili was allowed to join fall camp practice Saturday, August 8, a day after the fight. USC coach Lane Kiffin had pronounced the ban immediately after the scuffle.

The incident had started with a verbal exchange between the two athletes which occurred during the final conditioning drill for players. Havili had apparently shouted at Bryant to finish the drill and Bryant retorted with a cuss word. Havili then confronted Bryant. After some initial shoving, Havili hit Bryant on the face.

The blow fractured Bryant’s left cheek and it became necessary to perform surgery on it. The athlete is on a three-week leave from active practice and goes to camp to watch the other athletes train.

It seems that Havili approached Bryant to give him his apology and they made up on that same day. The lifting of the ban was done upon the Bryant’s request. His decision was was partially in deference to Havili who is the senior career leader for fullbacks. The team also benefits indirectly because Havili has been a starter for three years now. Having pursued the matter further might have made it necessary to look for and train another starter.

The Texas Longhorns Are Under-Manned But Coach Isn’t Worried

Written by Freddie Brister on August 29, 2010 – 7:15 am -

Fall camp opened for the Texas Longhorns with coach Brown having a lot of fixing to do. In all, 18 of their players have left the team and of this 18, many had left behind key positions in the game. Included in this number are QB Colt McCoy, WR Jordan Shipley, AT Adam Ulatoski and OG Charlie Tanner.

McCoy has signed an agreement with Cleveland’s Browns. The Cincinnati Bengals got Jordan Shipley in the 2010 NFL draft. Two team members has gone in as free agents in other teams. Houston signed a contract with Ulatoski and the New York Jets got Tanner.

To plug in the holes that previous members left behind, the primary agenda of this season’s training sessions is conditioning freshmen and sophomores in order to allow older athletes to go on and fill the key positions that are as of today unmanned. By any standards, this is no child’s task.
