With Matthew Stafford and WR Calvin Johnson, the Lions have a nucleus in place to start a respectable franchise instead the butt of jokes for once. The Lions finally won a game after a 19-game losing streak defeating the Washington Redskins in week 3. The previous win came in 07′ in week 16 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Redskins haven’t looked to strong in their first two games, so I’m not counting them out.

Wow! After a disappointing 2008 campaign and one of the worst defensive performances around, the Broncos were looking pretty dreadful. On top of this, their star quarterback, Jay Cutler, demanded a trade, and their star wide receiver, Brandon Marshall, refused to play.

The NFL may go on strike in 2011 because of disagreement between owners and players. There’s a collective bargaining agreement in place currently, but the owners have decided to back out from it. An uncapped season is the first step toward strike, and this is being put in place for 2010-2011. Unless there’s an agreement, we’re going to see an NFL strike next year.

The potential strike, if it happens, will be caused by what owners see as unfair salaries going to players. Specifically, owners want a different rookie wage scale, so that they can give new players less lucrative contracts in case the player doesn’t work out.

Currently, there is no such way to hedge bets. Owners end up paying out huge sums via guaranteed contracts to rookie players. These players may or may not meet expectations but will be paid these huge sums regardless.

The overall pay scale in the NFL is also under attack by owners. Currently, players are entitled to 59.5% of the total revenues that the league brings in. Owners are not happy about this. They have to deal with falling revenues at the same time that they have to manage the rising costs of maintaining stadiums.

The owners also point out that they bear the cost of promotion and development of the league. Players don’t have to pay out for any of this, and only take profit.

Who knows if they will reach an agreement? It’s going to be a matter of wait and see. Regardless of how t his turns out, there’s a lot at stake. A lockout will put the brakes on NFL’s growing popularity. It will be interesting to see how players deal with being without pay for a year.

This fight could go either way. The NFL currently hopes to expand overseas, and is always trying to grow in the off season to further their revenue. If the current snarl ends in a strike, they can kiss hopes of overseas expansion goodbye.
