Chargers Keep Cards Winless In NFL Preseason Play
Written by Ross Everett on March 21, 2010 – 3:51 am -Its been a rough NFL preseason for last years Superbowl runner up. The Arizona Cardinals have only scored one touchdown in two games as they’ve stumbled to a 0-2 record. Things didnt get any better on Saturday night, as the visiting San Diego Chargers added to their offensive woes en route to a 17-6 victory.
The Chargers cornerbacks performed admirably against Arizona, and Antonio Cromartie said scoring defense has been a focus for the team during the preseason:
“That’s one of our biggest focuses. Do whatever you’ve got to to keep them out of the end zone. We did that.”
Despite the teams lack of productivity Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt wasn’t particularly concerned:
“I’m disappointed that we haven’t had more touchdowns, obviously but I will say this, we haven’t game planned in the red zone. A lot of times when we game plan in the red zone we’re one of the best teams in the NFL, because we put our players in a position to best give them a chance to win.’
QB Warner agreed with his coach:

Seattle Uses Second Half Push To Run Away From Denver In NFL Preseason
Written by Ross Everett on March 21, 2010 – 3:36 am -Seattles Matt Hasselbeck and Denvers Kyle Orton both played fairly well in the first half, but the Seahawks reserves pulled away in the second half. The Seahawks improved to 2-0 on the NFL preseason with a 27-13 win while the Broncos dropped to 0-2 in their exhibition contests.
Hasselbeck completed 16 passes in 23 attempts including two touchdowns, though he was sacked three times. That was a big concern as he missed considerable time last season due to a back injury, but appeared to suffer no ill effects here. Still, the Seahawks starting QB said it was a traumatic experience:
“It’s just like I remembered- no fun. … I forgot how hard people hit in here. It’s just like a car accident. It’s part of the game … and it was probably good that it happened.”
After a rough opening weekend as the Denver Broncos starting QB, Kyle Orton recovered to post decent numbers. He completed 16 of his first 19 pass attempts including a touchdown before finishing 18 of 26 for 182 yards with a touchdown and an interception. After the game, Orton indicated that hes feeling confident about his play:

Baltimore Remains Undefeated In NFL Preseason With Win Over Carolina
Written by Ross Everett on March 8, 2010 – 7:28 am -The Baltimore defense shut down the Carolina attack, and QB Joe Flacco played a virtually mistake free game as the Ravens built a 14-3 halftime lead before going on to beat the Panthers 17-13. The banged up Panthers scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to make the final score respectable, but were never really in the game.
Both teams played their starters well into the third quarter. Second year QB Joe Flacco looked sharp, throwing for 247 yards and a touchdown on 23 of 28 passing before leaving the game with Baltimore holding a 17-3 advantage. After the game, Flacco said simply:
We were in a groove.
Tight end Todd Heap caught Flaccos scoring pass and added:
“Everybody was making plays, and I feel like we’re heading right where we want to be.
Both sides of the ball were clicking on all cylinders, which pleased the Ravens defensive leader Ray Lewis:
“That’s what’s most exciting, the way we are clicking both offensively and defensively. The bottom line is everyone is lining up and playing fast. We’re all playing well right now.

Bills coach Dick Jauron, on the other hand, didn’t have much to be happy about:
“We’ve got a lot of issues that we’ve got to solve. We’ve got to solve them very quickly.”

Bengals Beat Pats In Lackluster NFL Preseason Contest
Written by Ross Everett on February 22, 2010 – 4:10 am -When the biggest play of a NFL football game is an extra point, theres a good chance it was a dull contest. Such was the case in rainy Foxboro, Massachusetts as the Cincinnati Bengals edged the New England Patriots by a 7-6 score. The big play of the game? A point after touchdown by the Bengals backup kicker, none other than wide receiver Chad Ochocinco.
After the game, the always entertaining Chad Ochocinco was in rare form talking about his love for European soccer:
“‘Esteban’ Ochocinco is back, the most interesting footballer in the world. Everyone has to remember, I’ve always said that soccer is my No. 1 sport. I think Ronaldinho would be proud of me right now.”
To punctuate his fondness for the sport known as football in the rest of the world, Ochocinco whipped out his iPhone to display a picture of him with former England captain David Beckham. He then continued his comedy routine:
“Soccer’s my first love, Kicking’s easy … like riding a bike. I can kick them from 50, 60 yards, left or right hash mark. … I kicked all through high school.”

Raiders Rip Cowboys In NFL Preseason Action
Written by Ross Everett on February 21, 2010 – 7:05 am -The Dallas Cowboys received a solid effort from QB Tony Romo in his first action of the NFL preseason, but ultimately went down in defeat to the host Oakland Raiders by a 31-10 final score. Romo went three and out in his first series, but orchestrated a nice drive on his second go-round culminating in an eight yard touchdown pass to Jason Witten. Oakland’s first team struggled, but their reserves badly outplayed their Dallas counterparts in securing the win.
Theres been a lot of concern about the need to develop more long yardage passing threats after the departure of Terrell Owens. After the game, he brushed aside this talk:
“I don’t think it means anything. If one guy caught six straight balls and then we scored, that’s fine, too. It’s just about whatever the defense allows us on that specific play.”
Receiver Roy Williams caught one pass on the evening, and after the game sounded his vote of confidence with the Cowboys offense:
“If we execute like that, any team is going to have trouble. But we’re going to have our adversity and have our hard times where we can’t get open or the quarterback gets sacked or a bad throw. But tonight it all fell into place.”

Texans Cap NFL Preseason With Win Over Tampa Bay
Written by Ross Everett on February 21, 2010 – 6:53 am -The Houston Texans produced a 17 point outburst in the second quarter and went on to beat the host Tampa Bay Buccaneers 27-20 in the NFL preseason finale for both teams. Rex Grossman carried the bulk of the workload for Houston, finishing with 197 yards and two touchdowns in an effort that likely secured him the #3 quarterback position on the Texans roster behind Matt Schaub and Dan Orlovsky. The Texans evened their NFL preseason record at 2-2, while the Bucs dropped to 1-3.
Houston rewarded their NFL betting backers by winning outright as a +3 road underdog. Though oddsmakers anticipated a low scoring, defensive oriented battle the 47 combined points went well OVER the posted total of 33. In fact, with 27 points scored in the first half the two teams came very close to topping that total in the opening two quarters alone.
After the game, Grossman took a philosophical outlook on his immediate future as an NFL quarterback:
“I don’t control any of that. All I wanted to do was go out and have a good game for either this team or somebody else. That’s not up to me. I thought I did that, and we’ll see what happens. I feel decent about my audition. If they cut me, then hopefully somebody else will pick me up.”
